Love your Neck and Décolletage - before it's too late !

 

The décolleté, our neck and cleavage area, is often neglected and requires our attention and tender loving care.

Décolleté is a beautiful French word which we use to refer to our neck and cleavage area.  In the French culture, moisturizing and caring for the décolleté has been a ritual part of the beauty regime for many years but in Canada, we are just beginning to realize the importance of including this part of our body in our daily skincare routine.

Décolletage skin is very fragile and has fewer oil glands.  It is also more sensitive than the skin on our face, making it vulnerable to irritation as well as sun damage.  We should treat our neck and décolleté the same way we treat our face to maintain it’s beauty and youthfulness.

Common characteristics of a neglected décolleté are fine wrinkling on the upper chest and/or in the crease of the cleavage, brown spots, thinning skin as well as redness which can mostly be attributed to sun damage.

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO BETTER LOVE YOUR DÈCOLLETÈ

Use Sun Protection

The skin on the décolletage is very thin and fragile but often receives more exposure to the sun resulting in premature aging, faster then you can imagine!  Remember to include this area when applying SPF to your face.

Don’t Forget to Cleanse

Start cleansing and unblocking those pores, then gently buff away any build-up of dead skin cells.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture

The décolletage has fewer oil glands and requires extra attention to stay nourished and supple.  A concentrated moisturizer or serum will help you maintain it’s natural glow. And if you notice signs of discoloration or the start of fine lines, start using an anti-aging cream or serum.

Facial Exercises

You can prevent and improve sagging skin and jowls by doing facial exercises.  A simple exercise to try is chewing sugarless gum which will help tighten and tone those sagging neck muscles and skin.  Open and close your jaw repeatedly in a circular motion.  Chew for 20 to 30 seconds and begin again.  For slow but noticeable results, perform this chewing exercise at least three times a week.

Treat Yourself to a Facial

Facials are a great way to stimulate circulation, not only on the face but also on the neck and chest.  A facial massage will also jump-start your collagen and elastin to keep producing allowing you to maintain the contour and firmness of your skin.

Keep Hydrated

If you’re dehydrated on the inside, your skin will be too.  Keep a 2-litre bottle of water with you or on your desk and try to finish it every day.

The bottom line is that it’s never too late to start taking care of your décolleté and adding this area to your skincare routine will keep you looking and feeling fabulous for years to come.
